GRESB sets out next phase of strategy to transform sustainability data into decision-grade intelligence for real assets

The direction will build on GRESB’s trusted standards, benchmarks and expansive dataset, reinforced by the sustainability expertise and independent governance of the GRESB Foundation, to support better-informed capital and asset decisions.

AMSTERDAM, September 28, 2026 — GRESB today set out the next phase of its long-term strategy, focused on transforming sustainability data into decision-grade intelligence that supports capital allocation and asset improvement across global real asset markets.

The strategy is organized around three areas of customer and market value:

  • Capital: Connecting credible, comparable sustainability performance with capital allocation, investment, risk and portfolio decisions, informing how capital is directed and accessed.
  • Cost: Helping improve the economics of owning, operating and financing real assets through greater efficiency, resilience, stronger performance and lower cost of capital.
  • Comparability: Providing a credible common lens for assessing sustainability performance across assets, portfolios, sectors and markets.

The strategy responds to a clear need from investors, managers and other market participants: Sustainability data must be trusted and comparable, while also being easier to access, integrate and use when investment, risk, portfolio and asset-management decisions are made.

GRESB will build on its industry-governed Real Estate and Infrastructure Standards, established benchmarks, rigorous validation, broad market participation and more than 15 years of sustainability data. The next phase will focus on making these strengths more actionable at the point of decision, connecting sustainability performance more directly with capital, asset economics and financial outcomes. GRESB will achieve this by increasing the focus on measured performance, reducing reporting effort and developing more flexible ways for customers to connect to and use GRESB data on an ongoing basis.

This evolution is already taking shape through Road to Performance, the GRESB Foundation’s multi-year initiative to evolve its Standards toward a stronger focus on measured performance. Developed through GRESB Foundation governance, engagement with the market and an extensive public consultation, Road to Performance will focus on the metrics that matter, better recognize real-world performance and reduce unnecessary complexity. In doing so, the initiative will define sustainability leadership more clearly and make the Standards more useful in capital allocation and asset management, helping the industry deliver meaningful performance improvement across the sustainability topics that matter most, at scale.

Alongside the evolution of its standards, GRESB will work to make its data and intelligence more accessible and easier to integrate into customer workflows and systems. This includes developing more flexible, secure ways for investors, managers and other market participants to access information on a continuous basis, while maintaining the validation, consistency and market context on which GRESB’s credibility is built.

Over the coming months, GRESB will share further detail on how its standards, data and technology will continue to evolve to support more informed real asset decisions.
