Background

In cooperation with a large group of institutional investors, GRESB collects information regarding the sustainability performance of property companies and funds. This includes information on performance indicators, such as energy, GHG emissions, water and waste. In addition, the Survey also covers broader sustainability issues, such as sustainability risk assessments, performance improvement programs, and engagement with employees, tenants, suppliers and the community. The GRESB Survey is aligned with international reporting frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

The annual Survey builds on the framework of previous Surveys, but is updated and refined based on feedback received during GRESB's annual consultation period.

Why participate?

Benchmarking the sustainability performance of your organization helps to generate and strengthen the market forces needed to bring environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues to the forefront of your business. By participating in our annual benchmark, you will be able to better manage your portfolio in the face of higher and more volatile energy prices, stricter legislation to combat climate change, increased energy efficiency requirements and changing preferences of corporate tenants.

The benchmark results give you the opportunity to identify the areas in which you can improve your performance, both in absolute terms and relative to your peers. What is covered?

The annual GRESB Survey includes seven aspects of sustainability. GRESB also includes an additional New Construction & Major Renovations aspect in the Survey for those companies and funds that undertake development activities.

What is covered

The Survey questions examine:

  • What sustainability-related strategies, policies and objectives are in place at the organizational level?
  • What actions have been taken to implement these strategies/policies and to achieve the objectives?
  • What frameworks, standards and certification/rating schemes are used within the portfolio?
  • What key environmental performance indicators are measured and monitored within the portfolio?

Investor Members

In line with our goal to enhance and protect shareholder value, GRESB has developed its benchmarking framework to give investors in real estate the tools to report to their clients regarding sustainability issues and to monitor and engage with investment managers.

Investor Members are able to monitor the annual GRESB Survey results for all their investments and, if they invest in listed real estate securities, all listed property companies' results. Via GRESB's Member Portal they are able to view and download individual reports for each of their investments.

Property Companies and Fund Manager Members

GRESB gives Survey participants the opportunity to become a Fund Manager or Company Member. Our members enjoy a number of benefits, including:
